Cycling, swimming and Kayaking at Cape Cod

We escaped the Houstonian heat and went to Cape Cod. An old friend from Leiden has a beach house there and is always sending invitations. Last November we celebrated Thanksgiving with them. Then it was sunny and cold, now we arrived in the rain. At least it was not sticky. The next day the weather cleared and we went cycling and kayaking, not a bad way to spend a few summer days.

On Monday we took the ferry to Martha’s Vinyard, a small but famous island some 45 minutes away. We took the bikes and set out for the beach. The first miles were not as pleasant as we expected. We encountered lots of traffic and the road was narrow. One motorist told me I should stop cycling because last year someone was killed there. I was to surprised to have my answer ready. Of course I should have asked him to step out of his car instead. Luckily we found a bike path in the right direction, although with some rather challenging hills for flatland people like us. We did not see anyone famous, but lunched on a lobster bun and some clam chowder. Not too bad.

The trip back really tested our endurance and we came home quite tired. Our host suggested we would go for a swim in the sea and that was the ticket to feel refreshed and restored enough to get us through dinner. We left the kayaks alone that night, but went back for them the next morning. Kayaking at sea is real fun. We were reluctant to go back to the heat of Texas I must confess, it was a nice cooling down.
